FG Announces Nationwide Digital Skills Training With Free Laptops for Nigerians

FG announces digital skills training with free laptops for Nigerians. See what SGF George Akume said and how the programme will work.

The Federal Government has announced a digital skills training with free laptops for Nigerians, a new initiative expected to benefit millions of citizens and attract widespread attention online.

Beyond federal efforts, state governments are also rolling out large-scale youth empowerment programmes aimed at skills development and job creation. One of such initiatives is the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF), which has announced plans for the 2026 edition of its 30,000 youth training programme.

With regard to the Federal Government’s programme, the announcement was made in Abuja by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, during the inauguration of the Joint Implementation Committee for the National Conference on Digital Literacy and the launch of the Clergywealth Digital Skills Nigeria Initiative (https://clergywealth.com/)

Represented at the event by the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, Dr Ibrahim Kana, Akume described the programme as a major step towards improving Nigeria’s digital capacity and workforce readiness.

“This inauguration represents a significant milestone in the Federal Government’s deliberate and strategic commitment to deepening national digital literacy, strengthening human capital development, and promoting inclusive digital transformation,” Akume said.

Since the announcement, many Nigerians have been searching for answers to key questions such as whether the programme is real, who can apply, and when registration will begin. The growing interest reflects rising unemployment and the increasing demand for digital skills across sectors.

According to Akume, the initiative aligns with Nigeria’s long-term development plans, including the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy and the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu. He added that the programme is designed to support the Federal Government’s target of achieving not less than 95 per cent digital literacy by 2030.

Free Laptops for Successful Participants

Speaking at the event, Mrs Rosemary Osikoya, Deputy National Coordinator, Admin and Public Communications at Clergywealth Cooperative Society Limited, confirmed that participants who successfully complete the training and certification process will be provided with laptop computers.

“Beneficiaries who successfully complete the programme and certification process will be provided with laptop computers to support their productivity,” Osikoya said.

She explained that the initiative aims to equip Nigerians with practical digital skills needed for employment, entrepreneurship, and participation in the global digital economy.

What Skills Will Be Taught?

According to Osikoya, the training programme will cover a wide range of competencies, including:

  • Basic digital literacy and computer skills
  • Use of digital tools and online safety
  • Digital entrepreneurship
  • Emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence
  • Skills required for remote work and global employment

Each batch of the programme will run for six months, and participants will receive international certifications upon completion.

Who Is Funding the Programme?

While the initiative enjoys strong government backing, Akume clarified that the Federal Government is not funding the programme.

“The federal government bears no financial obligation, budgetary provision or funding responsibility for the programme,” he said, noting that Clergywealth Cooperative Society Limited is solely responsible for funding and implementation under the Future Proof Economy Model.

When Will Applications Open?

As of now, official application details have not been released. Nigerians are advised to be cautious of social media posts or messages claiming that registration has begun.

More information is expected during the National Digital Literacy Conference scheduled for January 28 and 29, 2026, when the Digital Literacy Academy and other supporting projects will be formally launched.

Why This Programme Matters

Beyond free laptops and certificates, the initiative is expected to help prepare Nigerians—especially youths—for opportunities in the digital economy, including remote work and tech-driven careers.

For now, interested Nigerians are encouraged to stay informed through verified sources, avoid paying money to individuals claiming to offer guaranteed slots, and wait for official announcements as anticipation around the programme continues to grow.
